Gamma (uppercase Γ / lowercase γ) is the third letter of the Greek alphabet. It is one of the commonly used Greek symbol in physics, mathematics, and engineering. However, inserting Gamma symbol in Ms Word is not straightforward as there is not keys associated with it. So, in this blog you learn four different methods to type Gamma (Γ or γ) symbol in Microsoft Word.
To type the Gamma symbol in Ms Word, place your cursor where you want to insert the symbol and use any of the following methods:
Method 1: Using Symbol
1. Go to Insert Tab → Symbols and click on More Symbols.
2. In Symbol Tab, set Font as “normal text” and Subset as “Greek and Coptic” to get list of Greek Symbols.
3. Select Γ or γ and Click insert
Method 2: Using the Alt Code
To type Γ or γ, hold down Alt key and type 226 (for Γ) or 947 (for γ) for using dedicated number pad keys.

Note: This method is universal (i.e. works even outside of Ms Word) but needs a dedicated Number Pad keys in your keyboard.
Method 3: Alt X Code
To get upper case Gamma (Γ), type 0393 and press Alt X immediately after it.
Similarly, to get lower case gamma (γ), type 03b3 and press Alt X immediately after it.
Method 4: Math Autocorrect shortcut (Fastest)
To get Gamma in Ms Word using Math auto correct shortcut

By default above shortcut is only activated in Equation editor. However, using the following one time setting you can activate the same outside Equation Editor.
- Go to Files → Options to open Word Options
- Navigate to Proofing and click AutoCorrect Options button to open Auto Correct window
- Navigate to Math Autocorrect tab
- Check the box against “Use Math Autocorrect options outside Math region“
- Click Ok and close all the dialogue box
